Field note

Reading close-app exceptions

Analysts reviewing exception reports together

Alert volume is not a badge of control maturity. It often means master data drifted while rules stayed aggressive. Flexidatasys cohorts practice a three-bucket triage that keeps monthly close validation honest without turning day four into inbox archaeology.

Bucket A — ticket now

Material mismatches with no known policy explanation: missing eliminations, unexpected revenue spikes, bank feed gaps above threshold. These get owners and due times inside the close window.

Bucket B — policy rewrite

Recurring false positives that everyone “knows” about. If three closes in a row produce the same waive text, the rule or the master data must change — outside the close if possible, documented if not.

Bucket C — documented ignore

Noise below materiality with a standing rationale. Ignoring without writing the rationale is how audits go sideways six months later.

Module 5 of Monthly Close Audit Mastery turns this into a severity matrix you can paste into your financial auditing app’s workflow labels.
